Looking for brutally technical death metal greatly inspired
by Decapitated and The Faceless? Then you needn't look longer than to
Sundsvall's Soreption. These guys sure know how to churn out some of
the most technical stuff this side of "Organic Hallucinosis"
that I've heard in a long time. Be warned - "Deterioration Of Minds"
is not easy listening by a long stretch and if you're easily offended
by doublebasswork then you need to stay away from this record. For the
rest of us, well, let's just say more aggressive-prone metalheads this
is quite the treat.
Starting from tone one of Suppressing The Mute it's pretty
obvious that these guys know how to just shred on their instruments
- guitarist Anton Svedin's playing ranges just beautifully from the
super-technical, fast, super-tight as demonstrated by most technical
deathsters out there, to some of the more beautiful soloskills I've
heard. Drummer Tony Westermark has, as suspected, the speed needed in
this kind of music and works perfectly with bassist Rikard Persson.
Despite being "just" three instrumentalists
the sound is really thick, much to the credit of the fat riffs favored
on this record. I really like the growl of Fredrik Söderberg -
enough old-school and with a very nice low end. And you can hear words
- which is nice. Playingwise Soreption has nothing more to prove.
As the music goes there are few sub-genres that demand
more of the listener than techdeath - the music isn't for beginners.
Soreption has managed to write some very memorable songs, and although
all the songs don't do it for me, there are elements in each composition
that I like. Best are The Hypocrite, Undying with its nice groove and
Breeding Exile that amply shows the tightness of this band.
If you like such bands as Decapitated and The Faceless
you'll recognize those bands' music as just slightly better than Soreption's
- but the Swedes have managed to put out a strong record that despite
lacking somewhat in originality has some very strong points to make
up for this.
