It's no use trying to tell you anything else than what
I guess everyone will say. This is Sweden's answer to Rammstein. It's
not the same genre, it's not quite similar. It is an exact copy and
everything is stolen straight away - except for the lyrics in Swedish
of course. But Raubtier does it with so much skill, so much heart and
so much energy that I simply can not stop loving it. And actually they
somehow manage to take it to yet another level of corniness. That is
a pretty good job if you compare to Rammstein.
Speaking about the lyrics: they are just as important
as the music in this case. They are just brilliant straight through
the record. Just the use of certain words and phrases, with a certain
tone, twisted into a dramatic context is wonderful. I can only pity
those of you who don't understand Swedish. Of course the themes taken
care of are heavy stuff like war, attack dogs and the end of the earth.
Per Hulkoff's way to spit out the words with a blend of rap, growl and
angry singing gives further force to the total experience.
But most important - as with all music - are the hit factor
of the songs. I could almost put them all as my favourites. Among the
furious stomping German march tempo there is a lot of catchy melodies
and sticky choruses. I am actually amazed that there still is so much
variation, within the narrow concept. And they do fast tracks like Kamphund
and Götterdämmerung and slow tracks like Hjärteblod and
Inget hopp with the same impressive sense for composing. Still high
above them all you find the title track. I simply can not stop playing
it.
As long as they don't bring an actual attack dog (I'm
afraid of those beasts) I can't wait to experience this live. Even if
you actually were Rammstein, it wouldn't be possible to do this thing
much better in the studio. It is basically up to you if you buy the
whole sound and concept. I guess it takes a certain soul and sense of
humour to do that though.
