It's been five years since Thyrfing's latest release Hels
Vite. I don't know if I shall call this some sort of a comeback, now
when the Swedish viking/pagan metallers release their seventh album
in fifteen years, De Ödeslösa (English translation: The Fateless),
which also marks their first with their new label, NoiseArt Records.
With Swedish lyrics, this will perhaps hit a more narrow market, or
perhaps that's a point without effect, because you wouldn't hear much
of the words anyway, even if you're native language was Swedish.
Thyrfing's metal leaves me without any stronger impressions.
It takes until track four, Illvilja, before I raise my eyebrows and
hear something that gets my body moving and my neck muscles in motion.
The same goes for track five, Kamp, when they let thunder loose halfway
through the song. Before those songs, the album have leisurely rolled
on slowly without any direct peaks and does so continuously until we
reach the album's last song, the title track De Ödeslösa.
This effort doesn't stand out in their discography. All
in all, it's rather viscous and slow Swedish metal. I think the somewhat
monotone keyboard takes the brutal effect off the music and it follows
pretty much the same thread throughout the entire album. The quires
are rather lame and I believe more powerful voices would have made good.
These actions are naturally nothing coincidental. That's the sound they're
looking for, but in my ears it's nothing breathtaking. A couple of good
tracks however lift this album to decent 4 chalices.
