When talking about band that wear masks to, as they themselves
often say, put the music at the forefront this has always been a double
edged sword to me as this invariably puts the focus, ironically, back
on the band members again. The Way Of Purity is no exception to this
paradox in my eyes. Perhaps the band feels that it need to have something
to attract attention to itself and the music, which is fine by me, but
as the music in itself is, at times, quite good I really don't see why
The Way Of Purity would need this. Or so I thought at first.
If you're looking for the one off exceptional record of
the year you'll need to look elsewhere since Crosscore is a record easily
forgotten amongst the throng of 2010 year's better albums. At times
I am really enjoying myself, but as the last note fades out my head
is totally empty. It's not that the members don't know how to play their
instruments but, as I have stated on numerous occasions, if you don't
have good songs this amounts to little.
In this day and age where records are legion you really
have to bring forth exceptional songs - and I don't hear those on Crosscore.
Instead I hear songs that might lead to a life in the supportbandcategory,
but never amounting to headlining the big stages. If The Way Of Purity
is content with this they might get some recognition and succeeding
in bringing some fans into the death metal genre but, sadly, they will
not sway many more seasoned listeners to their music.
After over 30 listens the initial excitement has, frankly,
faded into boredom. It doesn't matter if The Way Of Purity brings forth
a stupendous second album, Crosscore will be firmly planted in the category
marked with "not memorable" for me.
