Tempestt started out as a cover band in São Paolo
in the 90's focusing on acts like Journey, Kansas, Europe, Queen, Bon
Jovi and Dream Theater. They made a lot of gigs in Brazil in the beginning
which generated a solid fanbase. After a while they decided to write
their own songs but despite that it has taken them until now to release
their debut album. A wise decision maybe because it really shows that
they have played together for a long time and it is quite seldom you
here such well performed first efforts nowadays.
Tempestt is soundwise very reminiscent of their Brazil
colleagues Angra and Shaman; semi progressive metal/hard rock with melodic
vocals. The melodies also remind me a lot of Labyrinth. The outcome
is extremely well performed and the vocalist BJ is a new favourite of
mine and he really shines on song after song. Tracks like Lose Control
with its great chorus, the groovy Too High and the smartly arranged
title track are all great compositions but the big highlight is a monster
entitled Enemy In You. This track starts in a mellow way sounding like
a proper ballad but slowly builds up and increases in tempo and heaviness.
The chorus is nothing but phenomenal and as a dessert we are served
superb shredding, simply put one of the best songs I've heard this year!
With this said I also must pinpoint that there are a couple
of weak tracks that passes quite unnoticeable, such as Healing and Higher
(I Can Land). But in total; a great effort from this "new"
band and if they just sharpen their song writing skills all the way
next time they will belong in the same weight class as Angra for sure.
