Order Of Ennead's sophomore album "An Examination
Of Being" leaves me feeling hollow. And this is a really sad thing
since on paper I really should like what this band is doing. Taking
out the checklist we have, furious drumming, furious growling, blistering
stringwork - three factors that are absolutely very common on albums
that I like. And keeping in mind that these guys do these things well
I should be banging my socks off.
The biggest reasons as to why I'm not doing this are the
songs. Boy do I get the feeling that I have heard these songs before.
When we're talking death metal, mere technicality is only half of the
equation - I, as I would imagine most listeners of death metal, expect
the musicians to be top-notch performers on their instruments.
As it is now we get a good performance playing wise of
songs that I can't remember even after 10 listenings - songs that have
little to offer in the originality department but have been wrapped
in a good production. But playing well and sounding good will get you
some credits in book - but only so many.
As you probably have figured out by now, I think that
you are better off spending your money on other records than "An
Examination Of Being". I'm sorry - this just doesn't do it for
me.
