When one is in desperate need for a fix of good old death
metal South America is the most reliable place to go these days. Where
death metal has progressed in the rest of the world, South America is
stuck in the turn of the 80's to 90's. Chile's Sadism is no exception
having churned out a steady stream of album influenced by Morbid Angel,
Possessed, Death and Cannibal Corpse since 1992. Their 7th offering
'Alliance' does not steer from the trodden path, but honors the traditions
of old.
Just to make everything perfectly clear; 'Alliance' contains
nothing progressive, no elements that bring the genre forward into realms
unknown. If you are only the slightest familiar with death metal you
will undoubtedly have heard everything before. In theory, this would
likely surpass 'Alliance' into the void of clones, but when this thrash-influenced
death metal is delivered with such passion and honesty it is simply
impossible to resist.
Sure, you will not find the best songs the genre ever
produced on this one, nor the most memorable riffs and passages. You
will however be served a very solid slab of dirty old-school filth delivered
in a fashion many have tried to re-create but few succeeded without
being labeled a hopeless clone. As a bloody icing on the cake, the bass
guitar is admirably audible.
You know what to expect from 'Alliance' and your expectations
will be met. With an even quality all the way through it is difficult
to pick certain highlights. Subjecting it to a closer dissection though
the frantic riffwork of 'Impure & Obscure' and the dense atmosphere
on 'Treblinka' deserves to be mentioned. With 'Alliance' Chile and South
America takes another step to corroborate their status as the guardians
of the death metal of old, courtesy of Sadism.
