The backbone of Faith And Fire is Tony Moore and Mike
Flyntz, former and current members of Riot. Tony Moore was the man responsible
for the outstanding vocals on Riot's masterpiece Thundersteel (1988)
as well as on The Privilege Of Power (1990) and these facts work as
a rocket launcher for my expectations on this record. Is this really
another attempt to reach the fantastic Thundersteel album? Well, the
answer I'm afraid is a big NO. Accelerator has nothing to do with the
aforementioned album because this is mainly blues based seventies hard
rock. The only thing that reminds me of the gold old days of Thundersteel
is the vocals and it's a pity that the song writing quality is as poor
as it is on Accelerator since Tony still is in fantastic shape.
The album opens quite decent with the groovy and riff
based Ready with superb vocals from Mr. Moore and somewhat infectious
melodies. The production is fittingly old school yet crystal clear but
a bit too dry and without punch if you ask me. Apart from the catchy
Villanelle, a song with good potential but gets repetitive in the end,
the album lack songs with great hooks and melodies that stick. The compositions
often build upon a groovy and bluesy riff but falls flat in time for
the chorus. All these things leave me quite disappointed since I was
expecting something completely else. Tony Moore is the main attraction
here and my dream scenario is him teaming up with a bunch of great song
writers next time. That would be a treat for sure!
