In the third studio album of Soulfly named just "3", Max Cavalera has finally found out the best formula for his band. It sounds much more homogenious than the previous two albums (it does not mean they are not good!). Finally appeared the expected coming back to trash and hardcore roots. The producer of the album is Max himself, and for the mixing its Terry Date who has done a great job - the absolute Terry Date (Anthrax, Suicidal Tendences, Pantera). The lyrics are more philosophical, with more methaphors and according to Max they aim at the quest for an inner harmony. The drummer Roy Mayorga is in the band again and you can hear the tribal and ethno elements in numbers like Brasil, Enterfaith, Sangue de Bairo, which are the connection with the earlier albums.

You have to pay a special attention to the unexpectedly long, according to Soulfly standards, epos Tree Of Pain with the guest vocalist Asha Rabourin, who was also singing in Fly High from Primitive. It's a complicated and different song, with blending acoustic, melodic and ultrabrutal moments. Its the same with One, in which a guest vocalist appear in Christian Machado, the guy from Ill Nino.

For more agressive-like fans are Call To Arms, L.O.T.M and the hit Seek'n Strike. Thank God that in so many years the brutality and extremism in the music Max creates haven't disappeared. This is how an agressive contemporary metal album has to sound. It's an absolute climax for Soulfly and it is surely one of the best albums from this year.

The album is a mixture of delicate sound (Tree Of Pain, Soulfly 3) and brutal attitude (Downstroy - it retains the traditional rage and high energy of the band- Seek'n Strike). Max shows his respect for the victims of the terrorist attack in USA on 9-11-01 with a minute of silence, the purest form of respect. Call To Arms is also a way of protesting against the cruelty of Al Quaeda. Track 13, Sangue De Bairro, is a cover from Max's favourite Brazilian band Chico Science. There are many guest musicians in this album: Guest drums - Greg Hall, Guest guitar - Wiley Arnett, Pledge of Allegiance intro voices - Zyon Cavalera, Igor Cavalera, Jade Carneal, Noah Corona and Isabel Adelman. Guest vocals - Asha Rabourin,Richie Cavalera (Tree Of Pain), Christian Machado (Ill Nino).
