The finnish answer to Sweden's cyber warriors Deathstars
must be Scorngrain, you just add a bit thrash and then you have the
album 0.05%. Beware, all conservative metalheads out there, these guys
don't spare on the galactic space-powder.
Scorngrain are as far from traditional old-school metal
as possible. The keywords for this band seem to be "innovation"
and "new thinking". 0.05% is the excellent title to this cyber
drenched thrash anno 2006.With a bit more dance beats they would surely
outmanoeuvre both Pain and Deathstars. I admit that I initially was
sceptical just taking a look at this album as I stand with one foot
in the conservative line among those who resist this type of plague
upon hard and decent music. And after listening to Scorngrains 0.05%
I have not changed in mind.
The title to this album could easily also be the summoned
points and final verdict. Such a waste with quite good riffs and thrash
oriented material that is drowned in weird samples and drums from nearest
toystore. The production is more than plastic and feels really light.
Decent vocals from B.B Enema can't save this album from being quite
meaningless. Scorngrain is an optimal example on good musicians with
creepy ideas.
Somewhere deep in Scorngrain's hi-tech galaxy there are
some highlights though, songs that stand out from the black hole. Off
With Their Heads feels like a well composed one, almost with an touch
of the Bay Area style. The same goes for the haunting Draw The Line,
except from the annoying sampled keyboard part that gives me Europe
vibes. Those are two songs that save this album.
