Live At Wacken 2012 is of course a compilation DVD from
one of the greatest metal festivals across the globe. With almost 5
hours of metal music from 24 different metal outfits of varied fame,
performing 1-3 songs each, I really can't find any massive satisfaction.
I have naturally checked out the entire triple DVD set, even if I felt
a substantial saturation when I put disc 3 into my player. I honestly
am not interested in more than half of the bands presented and I see
this release solely as memorabilia and a document to concrete the 23rd
year of Wacken Open Air, more than a durable experience that solidifies
to a bright memory.
Many bands on the main stages are either filmed in a distance
that exceeds my preferences of what quality provides, or with close-ups
that makes the top of the screen cut the performers foreheads in half.
It's filmed both in broad daylight and pitch black darkness, as well
as in rain or sunshine. I'm not a filmmaker myself and perhaps nothing
to take further notice of, but I reckon someone had some difficulties
with the settings since the pictures are slightly fuzzy occasionally.
The pictures from the huge indoor stages suffer from the disadvantage
of the somewhat poor lighting inside and the rapidly flashing lights
looks rather bad when displayed on this set.
The crowds at Wacken aren't always massive. Have a look
at Suffocated playing somewhere around noon in the pouring rain and
you'll see for yourself. The filmmakers have a thing for letting the
cameras focus on the crowds and showing exactly how big they are and
what the capacity is during the major part of the recorded material
from the main stages, but definitely not here with only a few hard headed
metal fans standing strong down on the muddy grounds.
The bonus material is almost non-existent. We are offered
merely 2 minutes of pictures of the village, pictures from the sky and
a few shots at people and the audiences, while Hammer Of The Gods by
Saxon is played. Actually total crap and without any hesitation worth
the unflattering rate of 1 chalice.
Surely this release shows pretty well of what Wacken is
about, in terms of stage performances. Yet I never find myself in a
constant stream of euphoria with all these shorts moments that every
band gets. If you want to relive the 2012 edition of Wacken, perhaps
this is one way to do it, just don't expect an immensely solid happening
that will fire at all stations. To me this is something you see once
and then it will find its room on the rack.
