Ov Hell is a new "super group" consisting of
members from the black metal elite out of Norway. You may think what
you want about that kind of description, but what can you say when the
members are Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir), King (Gorgoroth, I), and the session
members Ice Dale (Enslaved, I), Frost (Satyricon, 1349), Teloch (1349).
The music is modern norwegian black metal, spit on by
many, loved by just as many. Having Shagrath on vocals you can not avoid
it being compared to Dimmu Borgir, since the man has very characteristic
vocals. It is indeed similar musically, albeit not as symphonic and
orchestral. It is more naked and raw, but with a relatively clear production.
Most likely very untrue in some camps but that is how I like my black
metal.
There are a heap of great riffs and even distinct and
harmonic melodies to be found, and sometimes they take it down to a
more groovy and normal metal level and at those moments the brilliant
one-off band I comes to mind, as well as Immortal.
A well executed album with some great highlights, but
also a bit too many filler parts. It is enjoyable for the moment but
the album passes by too quickly and does not leave many lasting impressions.
Bits and pieces work very well but it feels a bit too unfocused. Well
worth to check out, but I am hoping for a more solid effort next time.
