Ten, or you might as well say Gary Hughes, has been around in the musical business for a long time now and has more or less became an establishment in the hard rock community. Apart from Ten, Gary is also known for his work with Magnum vocalist Bob Catley and his latest project, the Once And Future King rock opera.

The Twilight Chronicles is Ten's ninth album and this one is very epic with lyrics that tell tales about love, lust, death, glory, revenge and darkness. It's quite evident that Gary this time has aimed to create a majestic piece in the hard rock genre. The songs are often very long but sadly the compositions don't inhabit enough interesting things to justify the track length. If the intention is to create ten minute epics you have to vary the songs a lot more than the case is here. Too bad, because most of the songs are quite capable rockers with catchy melodies but because of the length it gets repetitive and boring along the way. On top of that you can add a thin and muddy production without punch.

My personal reflection is that Gary is trying too hard. I would recommend him shorten the track length next time; it is actually not the length that makes a song epic. I might sound a bit negative here, this is by no means a bad effort and the album is filled with hooks that stick like glue but it could have been so much better. If Gary decides to let someone else produce the next album I would be the first to applaud that decision. I am 100 percent sure that guidance from the outside would be the turning point for Ten.
