I look upon Vital Signs and When Seconds Count by Survivor
as two of the best AOR records ever so when the main man from Survivor
Jim Peterik arrived with a brand new band in 2003 my interest was instantly
caught. Together with a new talent in the shape of vocalist Toby Hitchcock
they delivered a debut album in the vein of 80's AOR that surpassed
all their colleagues. When the follow up, entitled The Destiny Stone,
arrived in 2004 I was at first a bit disappointed but that changed along
the way and now I found it almost to be on par with the debut.
In the promo sheet Jim Peterik states that the aim for
the new album, entitled The Roaring Of Dreams, was to return to the
more commercial and hook-oriented material on the debut. Personally
I find that statement a bit weird since I look upon all albums in their
discography as quite similar sound wise. On The Roaring Of Dreams we
can find songs that are on par with the best they have done earlier.
The up tempo rockers Language Of The Heart, Let Me Let You Go and Defying
Gravity are perfect examples of just that and they all offer intriguing
arrangements and melodies to die for. But there is also another aspect
of this record which is the reason why I don't look upon as good as
its predecessors; it's in possession of a couple of fillers. The Roaring
Of Dreams isn't just as consistent as we are used to when it comes to
Pride Of Lions.
On the whole we get an album packed to the brink great
and addictive melodies, top notch and dedicated performance but I lack
that little extra something from the previous albums. This small disappointment
is probably the result of high expectations and fans of the band can
without a shadow of a doubt buy this blind folded. Pride Of Lions is
still one of the best acts in the genre out there to day and The Roaring
Of Dreams breathes quality all over.
