Melodic Meltdown - The Missing Link
Melodic Meltdown is a Danish band based around guitarist Michael Söbygge that after a couple of solo albums proceeded with this band. The debut came in 2003 with Second Skin and after some changes in the line-up the band is now out with a new two-track EP entitled The Missing Link. Melodic Meltdown is hard rock as plain as it comes, nothing fancy and not to soft or overly aggressive for that matter, but it is the guitar from Michael Söbygge that plays the leading role in this band. What I Forgot is the first track that starts with a heavy riff to switch in to a calm rhythm with soft vocals. The songs goes back to the riff again while the pace is kept and the guitar, even if its kept in the back, is the main force driving the song while the vocal lines feel like they are being held back, as if they where restrained. It features a solo in the vein of Iron Maiden and Michael Söbygge shows his capability as a good guitarist. The song has some nice rhythms and shifts in tempo but it never loosens up, it gets stuck halfway and a more tight sound could have been needed as well as more powerful vocals that tend to be a bit pale. Second track Virulence starts as a ballad with a reminiscence
of Aerosmith song Dream On with the acoustic second guitar and the emotion
in the beginning of the song. It turns into a more melodic hard rock
piece with melody lines similar to Threshold. It goes on as a mid-tempo
ballad with a touch of progressive rock with a sense of melancholia
resting over the song. Michael unleashes his guitar in a solo that adds
some heaviness to the song and although the slow tempo I hold this track
as the better one on this EP.
