Shy - Sunset & Vine
Shy has been in the melodic rock scene since their debut in 1983. Hmm... but what is the difference between these buttered veterans and other adult oriented rockers? Not much perhaps. The singer has a quite unique voice though, with a slight touch of Bernie Shaw (Uriah Heep). But Shy has some energy in their songs. It never becomes gaspingly boring, even if the harmonic melodies are put in the first room at all times. The guitars deliver some striking riffs from time to time. The intro to Open Your Heart almost has some Megadeth-feeling for a couple of seconds, in its heavy drums and guitar. But the overall comparison must rather be to today's Uriah Heep, not just because of the singer. Then some would say that UH today is a boring shadow of its former legendary status, but I like what they've done on Sea Of Light and Sonic Origami, although the sound is softer. Where Is The Love is an ordinary love song - but on the other hand a great song with nice harmonies and kind of bombastic sound that actually fills its over seven minutes with distinction. First Love has one of those melodies that you just have heard a hundred times before. But as long as it feels fresh in the big picture, some lack of originality can be acceptable. The production is extremely well dosed and edge-cutted,
but nevertheless it admits some quite heavy drums (for the genre) and
an excellent guitar sound. Listen to Steve Harris (not to be confused
with his famous namesake) solo at the end of I'll Be Home Tonight! This
is a bunch of high quality songs, in a package of great adult rock 'n'
roll. Don't be afraid of the melody!
