Sov gott embarks the debut album from SvartePan and the songs has been collected over numerous years, and that is actually nothing you can tell without reading the booklet. Even if the material almost spans for a decade in the making it feels natural and just as good as it all would have been with newly written songs. That might have something to do with that they have been touring and playing live intensively over the years and have created for themselves a reputation as a damn good live act, even if I yet have to see that for myself.

I believe that all their live performances have made them a really "tight as hell" band that bares clear seventies influences. Svarte Pan plays a kind of hard rock 'n' roll if you will or a heavy riff oriented hard rock with bluesy elements. It is easy to pick out typical seventies band as Led Zeppelins and Deep Purple as main influences with their music, but as always when it comes to heavy hard rock that hails from the seventies it is a clear Black Sabbath connection that put the final touches towards it all. But the Swedish inheritance should not be forgotten, since they might also be the most apparent ones, Swedish prog-band November is perhaps what is the most obvious and strongest influence, perhaps it is the lyrics that are in Swedish that makes that assumption the easiest to grab after and I think that fans of the Swedish kind of prog-music that hails from the seventies will probably get way much more out this than what I do.

It is a bit of up and down with the quality of the songs but the heavy and bluesy Så långt bort is one of the better ones that sticks with me, as well as those parts on the album where the music is kind of floating away. The ending of Den nya folksporten and parts in Varför ska ni så? is really great examples of that when the music has a nice float and is filled with great progressive groovy fieldtrips. When the pace is quickened and added with high energy and still a heavy groove as in Kom inte än and Trollkarl you could easily draw similarities with the highly energetic rocker Danko Jones, simply with an older sound and less punk influences.

Better late than never, when im writing this review it has been two years since the release of Sov gott and Svarte Pan is currently working on their sophomore album that is going to be released sometime during 2004, and my belief is that that one is going to kick just a little higher, hopefully… , since it feel like they have the potential to create an better album than this one. After all SvartePan is not my first choice when it comes to listen to music but I can not ignore the fact that it is very intriguing and Sov gott probably makes a perfect album for partying and beer drinking, but live is probably where Svarte Pan comes to their fully right, and if I ever get the chance to see them live I will definitely take it, I really think I could be worthwhile.
