Need an album to start up the party with? Well, in that case: here's Paperback Freud for ya. Roller is the full-length debut from the Stockholm based Swedish band Paperback Freud that deliver raw party rock in the vein of early D:A:D and with a hint of sleaze and a fair amount of AC/DC rock'n'roll.

This is nothing out of the ordinary really, but still it is so damn good if you are in the right mood. Raw and dirty rock'n'roll like we have heard many times before and even if Paperback Freud don't stick out that much it is something with their songs that make them stick with you. The tracks are in general short and not seldom of the rather intense kind, but I don't think that the songs are done real justice on this album, I believe they will not come to their full right unless they are enjoyed live.

One Of Us starts the album with a hard-hitting drive and a rock'n'roll groove and like so many other tracks on the album it comes with an attitude. Straight Out Of Hell has a great deal of early D:A:D in it just as well as I come to think about swedish band Sator with their kind of catchy refrain. The album Roller was surpassed by the single Raise It Up To The Flagpole that is a track that has some obvious AC/DC vibes of the Bon Scott era in it. A raw and dirty track with high intensity and with some classic fuelled rock'n'rolls guitars. Short, fast and intense hard rock and to be put somewhere between AC/DC and Danko Jones.

I wouldn't say that the album is filled with strong songs but they do the trick of putting you in a party mood and I can bet my left ball that this album will be one helluva lot better when you are under the influence of alcohol. None of the songs fall out of frame and they all somewhat keep a fairly even level even if they don't peak too often. Smaller peaks are the intense Raise it Up To The Flagpole and Don't Blame Me that has a Hellacopters vibe to it.

This album is not for the music lover that wants an album to explore and to find nuances in. What you hear from the start on Roller is all that you get. Nevertheless, if you want an album with groovy vibes and that is in the vein of D:A:D and AC/DC, this is perfect for you. Raw, dirty rock'n'roll with groove and catchy melodies and occasionally with intensity worthy of Danko Jones that ought to get any beer-drinking bash going.
