I am not at all familiar with Satyricon's earlier work but I do consider myself having a fair grip on the death-, black- and thrash scene. Compared to most in that scene, this does not impress me at all. It is quite boring to say the least.

This sounds like a mix between an american second class thrash band and Kreator, when they are showing them from their worst side. It does nothing to provoke, enrage, scare or get the least bit of hold on you. The mood that I asssume they are trying to create is never present. Everything is built on minimalistic and pretty cheap guitar riffs that are grinding on in the same midtempo all the time with a few exceptions (That Darkness Shall Be Eternal and parts of The Rite Of War Cross).

The horn section that is backing up some of the songs feel a bit unfitting. There are the occasional moments where they give some more depth and creates a certain amount of mysticism, but mostly it does not sound like it really belongs there. This is really all I can come up with to write about this album. It is very non-saying and does not stir any feelings whatsoever apart from indifference. Luckily they have the old merits to fall back on because this can not possibly attract any new fans. Not in my world at least.
