Legalise Drugs & Murder is the latest release from
British doom/stoner band Electric Wizard and the last one to feature
bass player Tas and drummer Shaun Rutter, who left the band this year.
Being one of my favourite bands, I was thrilled to get something new
to listen to while waiting for the new album which is schedules for
a late 2012 release.
The disappointment was however quite big when the title
track started playing, as the main riff is a complete rip off from their
own song Satanic Rites Of Drugula, from 2007's Witchcult Today.
Track two, Murder & Madness, is marginally better
but not anything spectacular. Rather than its own entity it feels like
an outro track (which would be a strange thing on a very short EP) or
the end of a twelve minute song. I understand what they're going for
with it - some sort of meditative horror movie soundtrack feeling but
it's just not a very interesting song.
Witchcult Today and Black Masses were absolutely fantastic
and the coming album will probably be great, although including these
two songs would lower the overall impression. It's not the most exciting
work they've done.
