The cover of the debut of two-woman outfit Nyx left me with two thoughts. First, if that office-like room is really the bands home it is in desperate need of the old tidying up. Second, the entire cover along with the song titles breathes the atmosphere of modern artsy fartsy black metal bands like Nachtmysticum and Wolves in the Throne Room. Not a very good omen in my book.

The label describes the music as extreme/black metal which is actually quite spot on. The first 30 or so seconds of the opener 'Beyond' is ferocious black metal with neat riffing and forceful growls. Beyond that... well it is difficult to describe really, but as furious and neck-breaking as those first 30 seconds were, as lame and uninspiring is the bulk of the remainder of the album.

The only reminder of the openings brutality throughout the album are the growls that actually sticks to a high quality from start to finish. The growls are however varied with clean vocals that supposedly are there to set some kind of atmosphere in the mellow parts of the album, but fall short and become well... not even worth to get upset about. That last statement could actually sum up this entire harmless and uninspiring album.

I suppose the band decided to try and set its own niche within black/extreme metal. In that 'Home' does indeed succeed, it is simply the riffs, songwriting, arrangements and the soft woolly production that are entirely lacking. I do have a feeling however that my rather orthodox taste won't prevent this album from becoming somewhat hyped. Don't be surprised if you will find this as Terrorizer's album of the month and/or on the lips of every hipster black metal fan out there.

On my part I will give 'Home' a measly two chalices. 1.5 for the excellent growls throughout the album and 0.5 for the opening 30 seconds.
