Druid Lord's sophomore 'Grotesque Offerings' could most
easily be described as Autopsy on acid. To the core old-school blend
of death and doom metal, psychedelic influences are added which gives
the impression of a drug trip gone horror flick. Not exactly a completely
unique combination of musical influences, but they nonetheless stand
out compared to most similar acts out there.
On the plus side: there are enough solid riffs and catchy
vocal lines to keep most deathsters happy. Also, the repetitive nature
of the songs works well enough and rarely turns into boredom.
On the negative side: most songs are somewhat long and
rather formulaic, starting out slow, turning up the tempo towards the
middle, only to drop back towards doomier realms towards the end. The
beginning out the album is somewhat weak, but from 'Evil That Haunts
This Ground' and onwards it turns solid.
Overall this album feels fresh and has enough qualities
to render a few listens. Not the most ground breaking of albums for
sure, but the combination of horror and psychedelia still makes this
a nice piece of wax.
