Down's new release is planned to be the first EP in a
series of four to be released over the next years. According to vocalist
Phil Anselmo, we'll have to wait and see if this will be the case eventually
and no promises are made yet.
Their heavy groove metal is still present to this day.
The Purple EP contains six songs and thirty-three minutes of straight,
raw Down music. A worn out expression would be that they are going back
closer to their roots, but what else can someone say when that's a fact?
It's heavy, direct and sometimes epic, doomy or dark. Not especially
varied, yet without a feeling of lack of diversity.
My favorite song off this release is the last song, the
nine minute epic and heavily Black Sabbath influenced track Misfortune
Teller. Also somewhat of a favorite is the first video off the EP, the
pumping, mysterious and arcane Witchtripper.
The Down elements are here, the groove, the feeling and
if you dig their past efforts, I'm sure you'll find this EP interesting
as well.
