If you've heard Trigger The Bloodshed's previous releases Purgation and The Great Depression you will perhaps be a bit surprised by what you're hearing on the British band's latest offering to brutal music Degenerate. It's not that TTB has downplayed the brutal side of their music, they are still firmly rooted in the soil of the grinding death, but the songwriting has taken a quantum leap on the new record.

Fewer songs, as has been the development on the middle record as well, is not a bad thing when you funnel all the good stuff down into songs like A Vision Showing Nothing, The Soulful Dead, De-Breed and Dethrone, songs that show beautifully just how good this band is at the moment.

Performancewise this record, to put it bluntly, kicks ass. The skill demonstrated by the musicians is just staggering and to my ears the members clearly are enjoying to play the insane stuff shown on this record. The musical pugilism by drummer Dan Wilding is just so good that I am reminded of the fact that technical death metal bands have the best drummers out there, the stringwork is equally impressive; speed, playing that is sounding as a very, very angry swarm of killer bees is on the loose.

The bass is barely discernible amongst the rest of the instruments, a sad fact on more brutal death/grind records than is necessary, as I would imagine that Dave Purnell is capable of some heavy chops when he's in this band.

The best thing, though, is the vocal delivery of Jonny Burgan. His growl is one of the best in the business - dark, foreboding, but without reverting to growling too deep as too many bands are doing these days. Although I can't say that I'm actually hearing all the words, it's very nice to hear some at least.

Trigger The Bloodshed has produced a fine recording, which is as uncompromising in its brutality as it is in its ambition to be more than just another techdeath record, and is making me very keen to seeing the band this fall on tour.
