Obituary |

Two brothers named Tardy (John and Donald), more known
from the long running and classic death metal band Obituary, decide
to form a little band on the side during their spare time and hence
we get - Tardy Brothers. This is something they say that they have wanted
to do for a long time but haven't had the time until now.
It is pretty amusing to read on their site that: "It
is not going to affect anything that Obituary is doing nor is it supposed
to sound like Obituary". Because the latter is exactly what
it does. It is the same production, the same guitar sound, the same
kind of riffs, the same vocals (naturally). If you are familiar with
the music of Obituary, you also already know how this sounds without
having to listen to it. The brothers have gathered some of their friends
for the guitar parts. They are Ralph Santolla (Obituary, ex-Deicide,
ex-Death), Jerry Tidwell (ex-Obituary), Scott Johnson and John Lee.
I find a couple of really great cuts here, Deep Down and
Fate's Call, where especially the latter is a nice punch in your face
with a great pumping riff in their characteristic simple style. The
rest is a slightly more mediocre version of Obituary with perhaps a
bit more groove. As with Obituary of the past years, I find it to be
somewhat dull and gray. The major part of this album rolls along in
midtempo or below with some decent parts but also way too many filler
moments. It feels like the songs don't really get anywhere and I am
left feeling restless and almost irritated, or perhaps frustrated is
a better word for it.
There is not much else to say about this, really. This
is nothing else than Obituary Light, and for die-hard fans this release
is a should-get, but be prepared for something not as intense and something
that I feel are scrapped ideas from earlier Obituary writing sessions.
If you like this, you have more to look forward to since the Tardy's
say that this is the first album of what they hope will be several releases.
