Aldo Giuntini? A name that was totally unknown to me when I received the promo a while ago. According to the promo sheet Aldo is an Italian guitarist that has been active since the early 80's. When his first two bands Cryin' Earth and Sky Drivers didn't live up to his expectations he decided to go solo in 1988. His first solo album, surprisingly entitled I, arrived in 1992 with diversified song writing ranging from power rock to speed metal. His second album was released in 1996 and this time Tony Martin was presented as the project's new vocalist. I don't know what Aldo has been up to the last ten years but now the time has come for his third offering and I'm glad to tell you that Tony Martin is still the man behind the microphone.

If you think Aldo Giuntini is another super guitarist who loves shredding and showing off most of the time you are terribly wrong. This is song based melodic hard rock with glimpses of heavy metal the way it was done a while ago. The atmosphere reminds me of the early days of Dio and I also can sense a smell of Black Sabbath in the air, not only because the brilliant cover version they've done with Anno Mundi (The Vision). The fast paced, melodic and catchy Not Connected could be a song written and performed by Axel Rudi Pell, a great track that instantly became a personal favourite. The best song however is probably the slow and epic Que Es La Vida that would have fitted just perfectly on The Last In Line by Dio. Another track worth mentioning is the closer Tarot Warrior and I'm quite certain that Aldo has picked some inspiration from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow here.

This was a pleasant surprise I must say. Aldo Giuntini is most certainly capable of writing great songs inspired by the eighties but still quite fresh. Tony Martin is as fantastic as always and responsible for increasing the quality level of this record. I must point out though that III isn't as solid and even as you might have wished for since there are a couple of indifferent tracks that are quite forgettable. The best tracks are however really great and almost saves the overall judgement in the end. First The Raven Ride by Empire and now III by Giuntini Project, I wish Tony Iommi gets to listen to these records and realises who he should work with in the future.
